Positioned between public and private, Strolling the Shadows offers an alternative reading experience, challenging how we commonly encounter text on our phones.

Developed within a cross-media brief, it explores how browser-based design and physical stickers can work together to create a layered reading experience.

Research

The project begins in the public space: stickers placed throughout Rotterdam feature quotes and a QR code that leads readers into the digital publication.

The text they encounter is a reshuffled interpretation of Shadowbook: Writing Through the Digital 2014-2018 by Miriam Rasch, a book I chose for its non-linear thinking. I reorganised its recurring themes into interconnected categories, allowing the digital interface to function as a space where readers can “stroll” between ideas rather than move through a fixed narrative.

Process

Another key goal of the project was my personal growth, building confidence in programming and pushing myself to experiment more boldly with typographic design. I achieved this by coding the website in HTML + CSS and designing the stickers around typography.

Through this project, I learned the value of collaboration, trusting my intuition and embracing playfulness, making it relatable not only to my family but potentially to others reflecting on their own formative relationships.
